These squares are another Christmas favorite that my mother would prepare. Actually, though, she had a sweet tooth and adored butter, so these cooking often appeared soon after Indian Summer had left us and the crisp autumn days were upon us. Mom's Toffee Squares1/2 lb. Butter1 cup light brown sugar (packed) 1 egg yolk 2 cups flour 1 pinch salt 1 Package (6 Oz,) Semi-Sweet chocolate bits. -- melted 1 cup walnuts, English -- chopped fine Cream the butter with the brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg yolk. Sift the flour with the salt and gently fold into the creamed butter and sugar mixture. Spread on cookie sheet or baking sheet and bake 15 - 20 minutes at 350 degrees. Cool for 5 minutes. Melt 6 oz pkg. of Chocolate bits and spread over warm cookie. Sprinkle with chopped nuts. Cut and store. |
